The Art:
The images on this site are a form of digital art called Fractal Flames. Fractals are geometric figures which are infinitely self-similar; in layman’s terms, you can keep zooming in on the figure, and you’ll only see smaller repeats of the original shape. Fractal flames are fractals that are distorted in various ways and then colored. I use a program called Apophysis to create mine.
The Artist:
I first became interested in fractal flames in December of 2004. There was an article in a science magazine about the Electric Sheep screensaver. On their site was a link to the Apophysis website, and I downloaded the program and started fiddling around.
I've worked on over 600 different fractals, and I never cease to be amazed at the variety of shapes, textures, and colors that turn up. The huge range of images that can be created with it is incredible. The range of reactions I get from various people to any individual flame is also amazing; I can have three different people see a shape in a flame, and it's almost never the same one.
